The Cottage
It's early in the morning,
And the sun's behind the trees.
There's blue sky and fluffy clouds
Floating in the breeze.
Beneath the rippling water
Minnows chase each other round.
Above, 'midst branches and leaves,
Birds and songs abound.
I crouch on sand, cool and wet,
Breathing air, so fresh, so clean.
This is where I do belong
Than any place I've been.
Edmonton, 12/15/84
I wrote that to go with a panorama series of photos I took of the lake one morning in 1980. The following is by Hartley Steward, an editorial writer for the Sun Group. His words put my feelings about The Cottage into precise focus:
"The thing about a cottage is the memories. Over time, the stories build up and become milestones for the passing years. The images linger somewhere between reality, legend, and myth . . . . It's a life apart from everything else, where only warm things happen -- as though every summer you step through the looking glass."
In a sad note of passing, The Cottage was sold in 2003 after more than 45 years
in the family. I miss it terribly and dream of winning the lottery just so I
could go to the young family who bought the place and offer them twice what
they paid. Mind you, that would be in excess of $200K, but it's The Cottage!!
{{{...sigh...}}}
[ In 2009, I found out that The Cottage itself no longer exists. It has been replaced by a house and the family now resides there permanent. There just ain't no going back... ]
